Sant'Anna is a small but incredibly charming crag nestled between the towns of Sestri Levante and Cavi di Lavagna. Although it sits just below the main road, it maintains a fascinating atmosphere due to its immediate proximity to the sea—you are just a few meters from the water!
The cliff features a vertical sandstone wall with some slightly overhanging sections. The rock offers great grip on crimps and arêtes, providing climbing that is both technical and endurance-based, even though the routes never exceed 20 meters in length. There are 21 distinct routes ranging from 5a+ to 7b. The rock quality is solid and good, but be aware that after sea storms it can develop a salty patina, making the holds quite slippery.
The bolting is close and safe. To combat the highly corrosive marine environment, almost all routes have been recently rebolted using titanium glue-ins.
Thanks to its South/South-West exposure, the wall receives sun in the afternoon. This makes the crag ideal for summer mornings (when the wall remains in the shade until noon) and for the central hours of the day during winter, benefiting from the area's mild climate. Climbing here during winter sunsets is an absolute highlight.
The approach is very short but involves walking through a road tunnel and making an exposed descent on iron rungs; extra caution is required. The base is relatively comfortable but consists of a narrow terrace directly above the sea rocks, making it completely unsuitable for children or pets. Furthermore, after heavy rains, the upper section of the wall can shed loose stones, so wearing a helmet is highly recommended.

For your rest days or post-climb activities, you can walk just a few meters west of the parking lot to reach the beach for a refreshing swim. Right above the crag, you can hike a panoramic trail offering stunning views over the Gulf of Tigullio to reach the ruins of the Sant'Anna church. Nearby, the beautiful town of Sestri Levante is perfect for a stroll, or you can take a slightly longer drive to visit the iconic village of Portofino.

Sant'Anna è una piccola ma affascinante falesia situata tra gli abitati di Sestri Levante e Cavi di Lavagna. Pur trovandosi a ridosso della strada, l'ambiente mantiene un fascino unico grazie all'estrema vicinanza al mare, distante solo pochi metri!
Si tratta di un muro di arenaria verticale che presenta alcune sezioni strapiombanti. La roccia è solida, di buona qualità e caratterizzata da un ottimo grip su tacche e spigoli. L'arrampicata risulta sia tecnica che di resistenza, sebbene le vie non superino mai i 20 metri di sviluppo. Sono presenti 21 vie distinte con gradi che vanno dal 5a+ al 7b. Attenzione: dopo le mareggiate, può formarsi una patina di salsedine che rende le prese piuttosto scivolose.
La chiodatura è ravvicinata e sicura. Quasi tutte le vie sono state richiodate con fittoni in titanio per resistere in modo ottimale alla corrosione dovuta al vicino ambiente marino.
L'esposizione Sud/Sud-Ovest garantisce il sole durante il pomeriggio. Questo rende il sito ideale per l'arrampicata mattutina in estate, quando la parete resta in ombra fino a mezzogiorno, e nelle ore centrali delle giornate invernali, grazie al clima mite della zona. Scalare qui durante i tramonti invernali è un'esperienza meravigliosa.
L'avvicinamento è brevissimo, ma richiede un passaggio all’interno di una galleria e una discesa esposta su pioli di ferro: si raccomanda la massima attenzione. La base è comoda ma situata su uno stretto terrazzo sopra gli scogli, risultando quindi del tutto inadatta a bambini e animali. Inoltre, dopo abbondanti piogge, la parte alta della parete può scaricare sassi; l'uso del casco è caldamente consigliato.

Per quanto riguarda il post-arrampicata o i giorni di riposo, a pochi metri a Ovest dal parcheggio si trova una comoda spiaggia per fare un bagno. Sopra la parete si ergono i ruderi della chiesa di Sant’Anna, raggiungibili tramite un sentiero panoramico che offre scorci incantevoli sul Golfo del Tigullio. Nelle vicinanze è d'obbligo una visita a Sestri Levante, mentre per chi desidera spostarsi un po' di più, la rinomata Portofino è una meta imperdibile.

The crag was already frequented in the early 1900s by Ligurian alpinists, and was later equipped as a sport climbing venue in the late 1980s by Andrea Vignolo and Giordano Riulino.
The original bolting has undergone major maintenance over the years. In 2016, numerous bolts and anchors were replaced with 316L stainless steel hardware.
An even more significant intervention took place in the spring of 2025, when the crag was partially rebolted with titanium glue-ins and new marine-grade stainless steel anchors to ensure maximum resistance to the typical corrosion of the marine environment. During this effort, 17 routes were restored with the collaboration of over 60 climbers and the contribution of local CAI chapters.

La falesia era frequentata già dai primi anni del ’900 dagli alpinisti liguri e, come palestra sportiva, fu attrezzata sul finire degli anni ’80 da Andrea Vignolo e Giordano Riulino.
La chiodatura originaria è stata poi oggetto di importanti interventi di manutenzione: nel 2016 furono sostituiti numerosi fix e soste con materiali in acciaio inox 316L.
Un intervento ancora più significativo si è svolto nella primavera 2025, quando la falesia è stata parzialmente richiodata con fittoni in titanio e nuove soste inox marine, per garantire una maggiore resistenza alla corrosione tipica dell’ambiente marino. In questa occasione sono state sistemate 17 vie, con la collaborazione di oltre 60 scalatori e il contributo delle sezioni CAI locali.
