Description

Karkaus cliff stands on a beautiful forest spot by a lake in the middle of Southern-Savo lakes area. Cliff offers steep climbing on holds, not very common in Finland.

In order to enjoy the offerings of the cliff also in the future, please conform good manners when visiting the area. Use only established paths, do not litter or shout or make loud noises, avoid all unnecessary wearing of the terrain. It's a good habit to pick up all litter you see. Open fire is prohibited. Be polite to the other people you may run into, for example boaters passing by often stop to watch climbers.

Note also that quality of the rock varies. Routesetters have done their best to detach any loose blocks, but they naturally cannot quarantee that nothing gets ripped off during climbing. This may happen especially after winter. The belayer (and other people) should never stand directly under the climber. Use a helmet when possible.

Rami Haakana & Paavo Ikonen cleaned and sent basically all of the routes in Karkaus during 2017. Three reserved projects were left for later.

Access is sensitive!

⚠️ 🅿️ Please do not block the road when parking. We do not want to create access issues with the land owner. Closest parking place can fit only few cars and you should park further away on a good spot if there are no spaces left.

🥾🔝Short walk to the cliff, 5-10 minutes. You can approach the cliff from either southern or northern side. To the main face (Pääfeissi) you'll get easiest by following the northern path onto the top of the cliff and continuing left and down. Steepest part has been equipped with a safety rope. Smaller face (Pikkufeissi) is easiest accessible from the southern side, but anyways sectors area near each other.

Not family friednly approaches. Also the terrain below the faces is quite blocky.

Time to time there are birds nesting on the cliff. Raven (korppi) has nested both on the ledge left from 'Horst-Günthers Traum' and on the midway ledge of 'Kiipeilyhullu'/'Om Krisen...' routes. Treecreeper (Lat. Certhia Familiaris; Puukiipijä) nested in the crack of 'Puukiipijä'/'Iltapulu' at 2017. If you notice any nesting action either on these or other routes, please do not climb the route(s) in question. It's advisable also to leave alone the adjacent routes.
