OBS!! FOR UPDATED AND LOCAL COMMUNITY TOPO FOR KVALØYA, PLEASE SEE: https://buldreforer.tromsoklatring.no/ and https://klatreforer.tromsoklatring.no/

Småbakkan is an idyllic place in the high arctic. The rock is the white Ersfjordgranite which can be rough and sharp on the skin! One or several rock avalanches and rock falls placed the boulders in the valley, and since then they have been reworked by water and glacial processes.

The style is typical technical granite bouldering, often with poor feet or handholds where body positioning and strength is required. The boulders are very varied: all syles of all grade ranges is available, from slabby no-hands challenges to steep biceps pulling.

In the summer the midnight sun will help you up the boulders at night. Winter time is generally considered too snowy and cold, but the most die hard boulderers finds a way.. Enjoy!

History

When the first boulders of Småbakkan was ascended is probably not known for sure, but bouldering as a sport started in late 1990's and early 2000's with local climbers.

In 2006 the first overview of the bouldering was published on TKKs forums and featured about 180 problems. Lorents Mandal, Øystein Andresen and Marius Mortenson was the first big contributers.

Later, as bouldering became more and more popular Småbakkan contiued to gain more problems, with several new climbers contributing.

Now Småbakkan is one of Northern Norways biggest bouldering spots with almost more than 450 boulder problems. Many more problems are climbed than those featured here - shame the information of these have been lost in time. However, some locals may sit on legends of lost ascents… and there's still more to do.
