San Paolo is the name of the long mountain ridge flanking the Sarca River, forming one of the most iconic sides of the Sarca Valley. Stretching from the famous Monte Colodri north of Arco Castle to the village of Ceniga, it is a true climbing paradise offering a vast array of styles across its many sectors. You will find everything from "old school" slabs and historical overhangs to modern extreme lines and comfortable multi-pitch routes.
• San Paolo (Promontorio di Kroz & Pilastro delle Vergini): This is one of the most historical sectors and, currently, one of the least frequented. It is characterized by compact grey limestone walls that demand precise, technical climbing. With over 30 routes, the style varies from delicate slabs to athletic overhangs. Attention should be paid to the bolting: while some routes have been recently renovated, others still feature older, worn hardware, reflecting its status as one of Arco's first developed areas. Always check the specific topo descriptions.
• San Paolo - Multi-pitch & La Placconata: The entire rocky belt is a playground for multi-pitch enthusiasts. You will find a mix of well-bolted sport lines (spits) and trad routes requiring nuts and cams. The climbing follows beautiful technical slabs, dihedrals, and sharp aretes, but also features steeper sections with generous holds. "La Placconata" is a sub-sector with four noteworthy slab routes; once at the top, a rappel is required to return to the base.
• Swing Area: Alongside the famous Spiaggia delle Lucertole, Swing Area represents the pinnacle of hard slab climbing in Arco. The vertical grey wall is dotted with tiny, crystalline holds that make the movement incredibly technical. The pitches are notably long and, historically, the bolts were quite spaced out, adding a mental challenge to the physical one. Most routes have been recently re-bolted, but stiff shoes and solid technique are still mandatory.
• Diamante del BA. RO.: Perched high on the San Paolo wall, this crag offers some of the most athletic climbing in the valley. The right side features steep overhangs with tufas, while the left side is characterized by pockets. The effort is rewarded by a breathtaking landscape. The base is situated on a small, somewhat uncomfortable ledge equipped with fixed ropes for safety. The sector is dedicated to the local climbing legend, Roberto Bassi.
• Eremo di San Paolo: This sector is defined by an impressive, massive overhang right next to the historic hermitage. Historically used as a training ground for the early Rock Master champions, it has seen a "rebirth" thanks to elite climbers like Stefano Ghisolfi and Gabriele Moroni, who have established extreme lines harder than 9a. The difficulties are consistently high and the holds are mainly chipped. It is an excellent option for rainy days or even night sessions, thanks to the powerful spotlights illuminating the hermitage.
Approaches to these sectors are generally easy, even if they are a bit long now due to the road closure.
Climbing is possible year-round, though the wall goes into the shade in the afternoon. Winter and mid-seasons offer the best friction for hard projects.
When your fingers need a break, the area offers plenty of culture and relaxation. Visit the Eremo di San Paolo, a spiritual site dating back to 1186, or walk across the Roman Bridge in Ceniga for a refreshing dip in the Sarca River during summer. The Arco Castle, perched on a nearby cliff, is a must-see for its history and views. For foodies, don't miss local specialties like Carne Salada, fresh lake fish, and the renowned extra-virgin olive oil of Garda, perhaps paired with a glass of local Vino Santo.

San Paolo è la lunga fascia montuosa che costeggia il fiume Sarca, uno dei versanti più suggestivi della Valle del Sarca. Si estende dal Monte Colodri fino all'abitato di Ceniga, famoso per il suo ponte romano. È un vero paradiso per l'arrampicata, grazie alla varietà di stili offerti dai suoi numerosi settori: dalle placche "old school" agli strapiombi storici, fino alle moderne vie estreme e alle comode multi-pitch.
• San Paolo (Promontorio di Kroz & Pilastro delle Vergini): Uno dei settori più storici di Arco, oggi meno frequentato rispetto al passato. Le pareti di calcare grigio compatto richiedono un'arrampicata tecnica e di precisione. Con oltre 30 itinerari, lo stile spazia dalle placche delicate a strapiombi atletici. È fondamentale prestare attenzione alla chiodatura: sebbene molte vie siano state richiodate, su alcune linee storiche il materiale può risultare datato e usurato; si consiglia di consultare sempre le relazioni aggiornate.
• San Paolo - Multi-pitch & La Placconata: L'intera fascia è solcata da numerose vie lunghe, che spaziano da linee moderne a spit a itinerari trad che richiedono l'uso di protezioni veloci. L'arrampicata si sviluppa su bellissime placche tecniche, diedri e spigoli aerei, ma non mancano sezioni strapiombanti con buone prese. Il settore "La Placconata" offre quattro interessanti itinerari su placca; una volta in cima, la discesa avviene in corda doppia.
• Swing Area: Insieme alla Spiaggia delle Lucertole, Swing Area rappresenta l'eccellenza della placca dura ad Arco. I micro-appigli su muro grigio verticale rendono la scalata estremamente tecnica. I tiri sono lunghi e storicamente caratterizzati da una chiodatura distanziata che richiede un forte impegno mentale, anche se gran parte delle vie è stata recentemente richiodata. Portate scarpette rigide e ottima tecnica.
• Diamante del BA. RO.: Situato in una posizione dominante sulla parete di San Paolo, questo settore offre un'arrampicata molto atletica e un panorama mozzafiato. La parte destra è caratterizzata da strapiombi a canne, mentre la sinistra presenta muri a buchi. La base è una cengia stretta, resa sicura da corde fisse, che conferisce al luogo un'atmosfera selvaggia. Il settore è dedicato alla memoria della leggenda Roberto Bassi.
• Eremo di San Paolo: Un impressionante strapiombo situato proprio a fianco dell'antico eremo. Storica palestra di allenamento per i campioni del Rock Master, oggi vive una nuova giovinezza grazie a top climber come Stefano Ghisolfi, che vi hanno liberato tiri estremi oltre il 9a. Le difficoltà sono costantemente elevate e le prese sono prevalentemente scavate. È un'ottima opzione in caso di pioggia o per scalate notturne, grazie al potente faro che illumina l'eremo.
L’approccio ai vari settori è generalmente semplice, anche se ora è più lungo per via della chiusura della strada.
Si scala tutto l'anno; la parete va in ombra nel pomeriggio. L'inverno e le mezze stagioni offrono le condizioni migliori per i progetti più duri.
Per i giorni di riposo, la zona offre cultura e relax. Visitate l'Eremo di San Paolo, luogo sacro dal 1186, o passeggiate fino al Ponte Romano di Ceniga, dove d'estate è possibile rinfrescarsi nelle acque del Sarca. Il Castello di Arco, arroccato sulla rupe vicina, merita una visita per la sua storia e il panorama. Lato enogastronomia, provate la Carne Salada, il pesce di lago e il pregiato olio extravergine del Garda, magari accompagnati da un bicchiere di Vino Santo locale.
