Description

Rowtor Rocks is a fascinating place, and I often recommend it to non-climbers as it’s well worth a visit.

The climbing here tends to be on the harder side, with plenty of mantels, but there’s still something for everyone. Many of the boulders are set amongst trees, which can make them slow to dry after rain. However, this shade makes the venue a good option during the summer months.

Enjoy a climb and take time to explore the many mysteries this unique place has to offer.

History

The history of Rowtor Rocks stretches back centuries. The pub below, the The Druid Inn, was built in 1851 and takes its name from the druids historically linked with the area. Some of the boulders we climb on today were formed when sections of the rock were carved out here in the 17th century.

Access is sensitive!

Rowtor Rocks lies very close to the village of Birchover. It's a unique but sensitive venue. The area is popular with walkers exploring the caves and carvings, and can become busy at times. If conditions are crowded, it’s worth considering nearby alternatives such as Robin Hood’s Stride or Stanton Moor. Those climbing here should take care to keep noise to a minimum out of respect for local resident
