Description

Onsøynipen is one of the largest and most varied climbing areas in Østfold, offering a mix of sport and trad climbing on solid granite in beautiful coastal forest surroundings. The crag currently consists of 8 sectors with more than 80 routes, ranging from short technical lines to long, sustained pitches up to 70 meters.

Climbing at Onsøynipen spans a wide range of styles and difficulties, with everything from well-bolted single-pitch sport routes to adventurous trad lines and longer multi-pitch climbs. The rock is generally compact and reliable, featuring slabs, cracks, corners and steep faces that give the area plenty of character and variation.

With route lengths from 5 to 70 meters, Onsøynipen is well suited for both quick sessions and full days on the wall. The combination of accessible sectors, diverse climbing and peaceful surroundings makes it one of the most complete crags in the Fredrikstad area.

History

Onsøynipen is the climbing area with the longest climbing history in the Fredrikstad and holds an important place in the development of local climbing. The first known ascent was made in 1932, when Daniel Enersen climbed Østveggen.

In 1954 Enersen returned with a new generation of climbers, and another line was established by Per Sendersen and Odd Sæther. These early ascents were significant enough to be featured in the DNT’s yearbook in 1955

Although these historic routes are among the oldest in Fredrikstad, they are rarely repeated today, as access runs through private gardens. Still, they remain an important part of the crag’s history and a reminder of the pioneering efforts that laid the foundation for climbing at Onsøynipen.
