History

Houdenbek Farm: History and Climbing
Nestled in South Africa’s Koue Bokkeveld, Houdenbek Farm is a place where deep historical significance meets modern outdoor adventure.

• Historical Legacy: The farm is famously tied to the 1825 Bokkeveld Rebellion. Led by a slave named Galant van de Kaap—who believed masters were withholding news of emancipation—a group of slaves and Khoekhoe laborers revolted, resulting in the death of the farm owner. The uprising was ultimately crushed, and Galant was executed. This dramatic event later inspired André P. Brink’s celebrated novel, A Chain of Voices.

• Modern Heritage & Tourism: Today, the site is a National Monument that operates successfully as both an organic fruit farm and a popular eco-tourism destination.

Rock Climbing at Houdenbek
In addition to its history, Houdenbek has evolved into a premier destination for rock climbers:

• Development: Climbing (bolting) commenced around 2010, spearheaded largely by Russel Warren.

• Growth: Others quickly followed suit, opening up numerous routes across the property.

• Present Day: The bolting of high-quality climbs continues to this day, making it a vibrant spot for the climbing community.
