Located on the outskirts of the alcoyano neighborhood of Batoi, Castellar is presented as the coolest and gloomiest school in the entire region of L’Alcoià. Its climbing takes place on bothsides of the Pic Castellar, although it is on its north face where its well-deserved fame and prestige has been forged, with more than thirty routes ranging from V + to 8b + and up to 35 meters long. Its limestone rock with whitish, blue and ocher tones usually brings routes with a light overhang at the beginning and vertical and technical walls at the end, where the seventh- and eighth-grade climbers will be able to make the most of its demanding crimps and pockets.
The origins of this school date back to the 70s, when the first artificial climbing routes began to emerge. After this first stage and a great break of more than 20 years, all these routes would be forgotten until their total disappearance, being the Ifach 73 the only one that, with its subsequent re-equipment by Miquel Llinares “Macro”, would manage to reach our days as a sport climbing route. In 2001, the equipment of Magnolia and Escaladores de números by David Vilaplana “Lagarto”, would end this period of great inactivity and mark the beginning of a new era ehere Castellar would fully develop as a climbing crag. Already during the first decade of the new millennium, the great majority of the existing lines would emerge, with a clear prominence of the local teams of Alcoy and, especially, of David Vilaplana himself, the main and clear developer of the area.
