Description

Burbage West is a smaller crag compared to Burbage North and South, but it offers some truly classic boulders. When most people think of Burbage West, they’re usually drawn to West Side Story, a much sought-after local tick. Other classics in the sector include Breakfast and The Nose, both excellent 7A problems.

The crag has a lot to offer for all levels, with problems ranging from 3 up to 8A. Most of the climbing is on vertical lines, though there are also a few bulges and slabs to keep things varied.

Facing southeast, it catches the morning sun, but in summer it can be a great option for an evening session once the crag moves into the shade.

History

Climbing at Burbage is primarily focused on bouldering, so the area first came to prominence with the early climbers of the 1960s and 70s. One of its most notable ascents was John Allen’s first ascent of West Side Story in 1985.
