Burbage South Boulders

Burbage South Boulders is often the starting point for many climbers outdoor bouldering journeys. The extensive boulder fields offer a large concentration of easier problems, typically with good landings, making it an ideal venue for beginners and families alike.

Its popularity and accessibility, however, have led to noticeable wear on the gritstone, so care should be taken to avoid climbing when the rock is wet.

Burbage has a long history beyond climbing. The valley was once busy with small-scale gritstone quarrying, and scattered around the moor are abandoned millstones, troughs, gateposts and other unfinished pieces of stone. Interestingly, the main track through the valley was built in the 1800s by the Duke of Rutland as part of a network of carriage routes around the Longshaw estate.
