History

The area, now known as Ancient Columns, is located approximately 2 km from Yahya Çavuş village in Ezine, formerly known as Koçali. It lies within the Kestanbol Plain, home to the Alexandria Troas ruins, and features twenty-one considerably large columns scattered across the landscape. This site helps visitors envision the relationship between humans and geology by presenting massive, partially carved columns that exhibit drilling marks, triple-wedge cuts, and other unfinished details.

The columns produced here were once transported across. the Mediterranean, particularly after the second century, with some reaching impressive sizes of up to 60 tonnes, 12 meters in length, and 1.6 meters in radius. Notable examples originating from this site include two columns in the courtyard of St. Clemente Basilica in Rome, four in the narthex of St. Vitale Church, and eight displayed in the Vatican Museum.
