Located on the eastern slopes of Monte Bondone, just past the village of Garniga Vecchia, Al Bar is an interesting and recently developed crag. Situated near the road connecting the Adige Valley to Vason, the climbing area offers a beautiful aerial view over the city of Trento and the valley below.
The rock is a beautiful and compact grey limestone. Climbing here mostly takes place on slightly leaning or vertical slabs, with a few routes featuring small bulges. There are 18 routes in total, ranging from 5b to a very long 7b. The style is generally technical and relies heavily on precise footwork on medium-easy grades, though some sections can be morphological and the grade may depend on your reach or body type.
The crag is divided into two distinct sectors: Al Balcone and Al Tavolo.
• Al Balcone is located directly above Al Tavolo on a small terrace. It is reached via a short via ferrata and features a parapet along the edge. "Spritz" and "Ugo" are the standout routes here.
• Al Tavolo is divided into two walls—one featuring shorter lines and the other offering much longer and harder routes, with "Radler" being the absolute highlight.
While the bolters have carefully arranged the bases of both sectors and protected them with parapets, the environment remains exposed and is not entirely suitable for children. A critical safety note: the belay stations are equipped with simple rings without carabiners, so you must know how to safely perform the lower-off maneuver. If you are top-roping, please use your own carabiners at the anchor to prevent excessive wear on the rings. Wearing a helmet and exercising maximum caution are highly recommended.
Thanks to its altitude of over 1000 meters, frequent breezes, and afternoon shade, this crag is a perfect choice for escaping the heat on summer afternoons. It is also an excellent destination for sunny mornings during the spring and autumn months.
On your rest days, the area offers plenty to explore. Monte Bondone is a fantastic playground for hiking and mountain biking. You can also relax at the nearby Garniga Terme, historically famous for its traditional phytotherapeutic grass baths (bagni di fieno). If you prefer a more urban experience, the historic city center of Trento is just a short drive down the mountain, where you can visit the impressive Castello del Buonconsiglio or the MUSE science museum.
🇮🇹
